Puffin & Pelagic Boat Trip

Puffins
On this 5 hour trip you will head out to Seal Island, owned by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, to view a puffin colony that is monitored by the National Audubon Society through The Project Puffin. Seal Island is grass covered and barren of trees and is a world unto itself 20 miles out to sea.

Our departure/arrival times for this trip have changed from morning to afternoon so that we may be able to view the Red-Billed Tropicbird that has been a favorite sighting for the past several years. He usually comes out from under his rock on the shoreline at about 4:00 pm. This is an unusual bird that you may be able to add to your life list.

You may see other pelagic birds on the Puffin & Pelagic Boat Trips including the uncommon "Common Murre", arctic terns, gulls, sea ducks, great cormorants, razorbills, gannets, red-necked phalarope, mure, scoters, loons and guillemots as well as marine animals including harbor seals, gray seals, and possibly porpoises and whales.

Island Boat Trips

View of Acadia National Park from Frenchboro IslandThese day long Island Boat Trips are a wonderful way to see the Maine Coast from the water. The beauty of the hundreds of spruce covered and rock bound islands in the Penobscot and Jerico Bays will astound you. There are few places in the world as breathtaking. To make these boat trips even more interesting you will be able to visit a few of these small magical islands where some pretty determined and independent folks live and work.

Many of these people are either lobstermen or folks who have something to do with the fishing industry. Many of them and their families have been on these islands for many generations. There are traditions and a way of life that make for some interesting cultural differences.

In your few hours on these small wonderful islands you will be able to walk or ride a bike through these villages with boats, traps, fishing gear, and lobster shacks, all bunched together. On some of the islands a bike ride will bring you around part, if not all, of the island. This is a good way to see these islands. (We can bring bikes to Vinalhaven, North Haven, Swan's, and Isle au Haut. Frenchboro/Long Island is small enough so that you can walk through the forest paths to the cliffs; bikes are not needed.

For the Isle au Haut trip you will need to bring your lunch. Box lunches, beverages and snacks available at Old Quarry - see menu. Please order lunches at least a day ahead. For the other islands you can either bring your lunch or eat at the restaurants or take outs. Some island eateries close down after Labor Day. Please plan accordingly.
